“Charlie? Charlie…”
The voice was familiar, but not quite familiar enough for Charlie to place it. He tried to open his eyes but saw only a blur punctuated by a blue haze. Panic began to worm its way into his chest when he realised his limbs were heavy and didn’t seem to be responding to his brain.
“Charlie, it’s Teddy Lupin. You’re in St Mungo’s, mate.”
“Sss… Sigrid?” Charlie’s tongue was thick and slow.
“Is that the dragon? She’ll be fine. Your colleagues are looking after her.”
“How - how long?”
There was a pause.
“Five weeks, mate, or thereabouts.”

“Hi Charlie, it’s Luna Lovegood here. I just came to talk for a while.”
The soft, lyrical voice was instantly soothing.
“So Healer Lupin tells me you’ve been quite down.”
Charlie would’ve closed his eyes, but it wasn’t like he could see anything anyway.
“Would you like to talk about how you’re feeling?”
He shook his head.
“Okay then. I’ll leave you alone, but I want you to think about something. I’m going to come back tomorrow, and when I do I’d like you to tell me about everything in your life that you haven’t yet achieved.”
Charlie just grunted.

Charlie was sceptical about Healer Lovegood’s cheering-up techniques. He was sure she was trying to make him feel worse by forcing him to remember the things he could no longer do, the opportunities he’d missed. His list had been surprisingly long.
“I’ve always wanted a proper relationship. I‘ve - I‘ve never really had one.”
“Okay, good. And do you think that the problems with your eyesight will stop that from happening?”
Charlie snorted. “Of course. Who’ll want an old blind man for a husband?”
“But you’re not an old blind man. You’re Charlie Weasley.”
Charlie wished he could believe her.

Charlie was sick of seeing Healer Thomas almost every day. It was such hard work, trying to pretend that he didn’t get an erection every time the man came near him.
“I’m so sorry, Charlie, but I’m finding no improvement in your eyesight.”
Charlie sighed.
“I think we’re going to have to send you home soon. There’s not really much I can do here that we can’t do through home visits.”
Healer Thomas’ hand brushed over Charlie’s cheek and an involuntary shiver ran through Charlie’s body.
“Will you be the one coming to me?”
“Of course, Charlie. Whatever you need.”

“Luna - I don’t think I need to see you anymore. Not as a Healer, anyway.”
Charlie couldn’t make out her features clearly, but he was sure she was smiling.
“That’s good,” said Luna. “I’m very glad for you.”
“Hopefully I’ll be able to move out of Mum and Dad’s soon, and, well, start a new life for myself.”
“That’s fantastic, Charlie. I‘ll tell Healer Thomas. Although, since he’s been coming to see you outside his work hours for months, he might want to keep visiting anyway.”
“What?”
“Well, he only comes because he wants to. Didn‘t you know?”

“You can call me Dean now, Charlie.”
“Dean. Great. Dinner smells lovely.”
“It will be. There’s a glass of wine waiting for you. It’s a Pinot Gris.”
Charlie fought to contain his excitement as Dean’s strong hands rested on his shoulders. A warm breath ghosted against his neck and he almost moaned out loud.
“Charlie-”
Dean sounded unsure about something, which was very unlike him.
“Yes?”
“Can - can I kiss you? I’ve been wanting to for so long.”
Charlie nodded, his breath quickening.
As Dean’s soft lips pressed against his, Charlie silently thanked fate for allowing him a new beginning.
